Shelters and adoption centres across the country report that black cats are less likely to get adopted than their white or tabby counterparts. Half of the cats the RSPCA cares for are either black or black and white.

There could be a number of reasons why black cats are overlooked, from their association with witchcraft, magic and bad luck to not looking good in selfies on social media.

Black Cat Appreciation Day on 17 August celebrates black cats and encourages people to consider adopting the kitties who often get left behind.
