The smiley face is one of the most recognisable icons in the world. It was created in 1963 by commercial artist and designer Harvey Ball.
As his symbol became commercialised, Harvey Ball became concerned that its original meaning of good will and good cheer was being lost. So in 1999 he started World Smile Day, which is now celebrated all over the world on the first Friday in October. The event helps raise money for the Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation, a charitable trust that supports various children’s causes.
Join the celebration this year on Friday 5 October and “Do an act of kindness – help one person smile!”
